SoftBank Corp. is in talks with electronics manufacturer Sharp Corp. to buy a site for its artificial intelligence data center, Nikkei reported on Friday. If the negotiations are successful, SoftBank will own 60% of Sharp's land and facilities in Japan's Osaka prefecture, according to the report.
SoftBank plans to "equip the data center with high-performance chips and make it a large base that can be leased to outside companies and others that develop and operate AI," Nikkei wrote. It will reportedly buy graphics processing units from Nvidia Corp. to aid in generative AI development. The site is likely to start operations next year.
