Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday started his official visit to China and called for closer relations and collaboration with Beijing during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

"We want to build bridges to jointly defend a fair trade order, in the most scrupulous respect of the multilateral framework and keep our markets open, in order to allow our economies to grow and benefit our industries and citizens," Sanchez wrote in his X account. The Spanish prime minister is expected to hold an official meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later in the day, according to the schedule provided by his office.

Sanchez's visit to Beijing comes amid tense relations between the European Union and China after the bloc decided to impose tariffs on electric vehicles from China.
