Spanish health authorities reported on Tuesday that over the past 24 hours 49,823 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in the country, the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic. This means that the total number of cases now stands at 5,585,054.
For the same time period, the number of people that died due to the virus increased by 94, bringing the total death toll to 88,887. Furthermore, the COVID incidence rate grew to 695 cases per 100,000 residents, exceeding the highest peak recorded in November 2020.
In light of the new numbers, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reportedly plans to convene a meeting on Wednesday to discuss introducing new measures to help curb the spread of the virus.
