British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he is "ready and willing" to put troops on the ground in Ukraine to safeguard any peace deal.
Writing in The Telegraph ahead of an emergency summit with European leaders in Paris on Monday, Starmer stressed that the United Kingdom is "ready to play a leading role" in Ukraine's security, including the commitment of £3 billion a year until 2030. "But it also means being ready and willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary," he wrote. "I do not say that lightly," Starmer shared, acknowledging that he feels "very deeply the responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm's way."
"But any role in helping to guarantee Ukraine's security is helping to guarantee the security of our continent and the security of this country," he said, adding that the end of the war, when it comes, "cannot merely become a temporary pause before Putin attacks again."
