British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed on Wednesday that his government reached an agreement with Comcast Corp.'s subsidiary firm Universal Destinations & Experiences to build a new Universal theme park in Bedfordshire, UK.
"We have closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will make Bedford home to one of Europe's biggest theme parks. Creating 28,000 jobs, boosting our economy, and driving local and national growth," Starmer said in a post on X, claiming that the project will bring an estimated £50 billion boost for the UK economy. "This is our Plan for Change in action — bringing investment, security, opportunity, growth, jobs and joy to Britain," he added.
The project will also mark the first Universal-branded theme park in Europe, with the company expecting around 8.5 million visitors in the first year. The park is set to be a part of a larger 476-acre entertainment resort complex, which will include a 500-room hotel.
