Major stock markets in the United States closed lower on Friday in anticipation of US President Donald Trump's tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, which were confirmed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to be implemented tomorrow. Investors also digested earnings reports from Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Colgate-Palmolive, among others, and the US report on personal spending, which showed an increase of 0.7% in December.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 0.75% at the closing bell, with Chevron slipping by 4.55%. At the same time, the Nasdaq 100 decreased by 0.14%, as Nvidia declined by 3.67%, while the S&P 500 fell by 0.51% at the close, with Deckers Outdoor tumbling by 20.53%.
The euro lost 0.32% against the dollar and sold for $1.03739 at 3:59 pm ET.
