United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reintroduced the fracking ban in England, his spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday, making a U-turn on the former government's decision.
Official confirmation comes after Sunak stated he will "stand by the manifesto" on fracking during his first Prime Minister's Questions Time on Wednesday. This decision is in line with Conservative Party Manifesto 2019 which placed a moratorium on fracking until science categorically proves the method's safety.
Former Prime Minister Liz Truss lifted the ban in September, citing fracking could help boost the domestic oil supply. The decision was controversial as the technique requires huge amounts of water and involves injecting fluid at high pressure into shale rock causing earth tremors, both deemed environmentally unfriendly.
