Myanmar's deposed State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, who was previously sentenced to 33 years in prison, has been pardoned by the military junta, state media MRTV reported on Tuesday.
"Chairman of State Administration Council pardons Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was sentenced by the relevant courts," the state media wrote citing the junta's statement. However, the amnesty only applies to five out of 19 charges, which resulted in a six-year lower jail sentence. Among the 7,000 prisoners granted clemency, to mark Buddhist Lent, is also former President Win Myint. The decision comes only a day after the military government decided to postpone elections by extending the state of emergency for another six months until January 31, 2024.
Suu Kyi was arrested back in February 2021, following a military coup. She was sentenced on multiple charges, most of which were brought by the military government, including for election fraud and corruption.
