Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto accused on Monday unnamed politicians from the European Union of being "pro-war" and trying to obstruct the meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, respectively, on the matter of the conflict in Ukraine.
In a Facebook post, Szijjarto insisted that Hungary has "always argued in favor of a ceasefire, peace negotiations, and keeping diplomatic channels open, even when we have been subjected to subpar attacks by European and former American political leaders." "Hungary is interested in the success of the summit, we will provide all necessary support for this, and we will do everything in our power to prevent Brussels' efforts to make the summit impossible and difficult," he concluded after a call with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
When Trump and Putin's meeting was first announced, Szijjarto hailed the news as "the only way" to peace.
