UK issues additional fishing licenses for EU vessels

The European Commission announced on Saturday that the United Kingdom issued additional fishing licenses for vessels from the European Union.

According to the Commission, 18 licenses were issued for EU replacement vessels in the UK territorial waters and 5 licenses were issued for EU vessels to access Jersey waters. "Further technical consultations will continue with the aim to have 7 additional replacement vessels licensed by the end of Monday," the EU added.

Earlier, France claimed 104 of its boats that should have been given licenses under a Brexit deal signed in 2020 were still not allowed to operate in the British waters as of Friday. French State Secretary for European Affairs Clement Beaune noted that if some licenses are granted "as a gesture of goodwill" by the UK, Paris would be open to continue negotiations. Otherwise, it would ask the Commission to "begin a legal complaint."
