Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te announced on Friday that the island will invest more in the United States to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly in trade.
His remarks came at a press conference following a phone call with US President Donald Trump. Previously, Trump accused Taiwan of unfair dominance in the semiconductor sector and of taking jobs and operations in that area away from the US. He also threatened to introduce a set of chip-linked tariffs on Taiwan to boost his country's position in the field.
"I would like to emphasize that Taiwan, as the world's most powerful semiconductor country, has the ability and willingness to cope with the new situation," Lai insisted, claiming that the island is ready to work with its partners to create a "more resilient and diversified semiconductor supply chain."
