United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May said while answering questions in Parliament on Wednesday that she will try to negotiate a Brexit deal which would provide Britain with “maximum possible access” to the European single market.
May said the government intends to respect the will of the British people, who voted in favour of the country leaving the bloc in June, and control migration. She reiterated her stance that the U.K. will be “ambitious” when negotiating Brexit as it will attempt to keep access to the single market.
A number of EU leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and France’s President Francois Hollande, have stated that the U.K. will have to give up its right to control the movement of people if it wants to maintain access to the European market.
