Open Compute Project, an organization that shares designs of data center products, announced on Tuesday in a statement that tech firms Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Inc., Arm Holdings plc, Intel Corporation, Meta Platforms, Microsoft Corporation, Nvidia Corporation, and Qualcomm Inc., released a document on standardization of next-generation narrow precision data formats for artificial intelligence (AI).
The Microscaling Formats (MX) Alliance, consisting of the aforementioned companies, released the document with specifications "to enable and encourage broad industry adoption and provide the foundation for potential future narrow-format innovations."
Alongside this document, a white paper and emulation libraries, which "provide details on the data science approach and select results of MX in action," have also been made available. The steps taken today are aimed at accelerating the pace of AI advancement, and promoting "openness, accountability, and the responsible development of AI applications," OCP commented.
