Thailand's National Assembly, Ratthasapha, approved on Friday Paetongtarn Shinawatra (pictured), the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, as the country's new prime minister.
The 37-year-old politician, the daughter of Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra thus became the country's youngest head of government. She was nominated as a candidate for the position as her predecessor and party colleague Srettha Thavisin was ousted after it was revealed a minister in his cabinet, Pichit Chuenban, served time in jail over bribery.
The naming came at somewhat the same time the Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of the opposition party Move Forward, which won the general election in 2023 but did not form a coalition and government. The European Union criticized the move.
