Social media giant TikTok, developed by the Chinese company ByteDance, filed a federal lawsuit against Montana following the enactment of a law that prohibits the usage of the popular short-video app in the state.
"We are challenging Montana’s unconstitutional TikTok ban to protect our business and the hundreds of thousands of TikTok users in Montana," TikTok said in a statement. As per the filing, the company said the state enacted "extraordinary and unprecedented measures based on nothing more than unfounded speculation."
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte previously defended the ban citing data protection and accusing the platform of providing users' personal information to the Chinese Communist Party.
