Toyota allegedly to absorb tariff costs

UNSPLASH / SADMAN NAFIS

Toyota Motor Corporation told its suppliers it will cover the added costs stemming from new United States tariffs, according to sources cited by the Financial Times on Wednesday. The move comes after US President Donald Trump unveiled a sweeping 25% tariff on all imported cars, raising concerns across the global automotive industry.

Hideki Takamiya, president of mobility solutions at Osaka-based Starlite, which supplies grilles to Mazda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors, echoed the deepening anxiety among suppliers. "If we don’t strike new balanced partnerships between car and parts makers, then we won’t survive," he stressed. The announcement adds to growing uncertainty, as Honda was also reported to be weighing a shift in production from Mexico and Canada to the United States - claims Ottawa promptly denied.
