Trudeau 'looks forward' to working with Meloni

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday issued a congratulatory statement after Giorgia Meloni became Italy's first woman prime minister.

"I look forward to working with Prime Minister Meloni to advance the relationship between our two countries and make progress on issues that matter to Canadians and Italians alike," Trudeau said, adding that Ottawa and Rome plan to jointly address trans-Atlantic security threats and help "bring an end to Russia's illegal and unjustifiable invasion" of Ukraine.

In the statement, the Canadian prime minister also thanked his outgoing counterpart Mario Draghi for his partnership over the past two years, wishing him the best in future endeavors.
