Trump admin may revoke asylum claims

The administration of United States President Donald Trump could revoke asylum claims for hundreds of thousands of migrants in the United States in order to speed up the deportation process, CNN News reported on Wednesday.

The media outlet cited sources familiar with the matter, saying that the administration is targeting people who had entered the country unlawfully and later applied for asylum. This move would lead to hundreds of thousands of closed cases, exposing applicants to the risk of deportation. Since Trump took office back in January, he revoked access to asylum claims at the southern border. According to federal data, around 1.45 million people are currently waiting for protection.

Earlier this month, the US president called on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to "do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History."
