Trump claims China manipulates currency to offset tariffs

EPA-EFE/JUSTIN LANE

United States President Donald Trump criticized non-monetary trade barriers imposed by other countries, calling them "even worse than tariffs." He said such restrictions block US products from entering foreign markets, singling out China as "one of the bigger offenders."

Trump accused China of stealing US intellectual property and manipulating its currency. He said, "They're manipulating their currency today as an offset against the tariffs. You're not supposed to do that, the game is not supposed to be played that way."

Trump noted he had a good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping but said that changed after COVID-19 hit, which he called "the bridge too far." He described Xi as "a very smart guy" but stressed, "I love our country," adding that the US must stop letting others take advantage. Trump argued that while the US once tried to help other nations grow, "those days are over."
