United States President Donald Trump is considering exempting car parts from some of his tariffs, amid lobbying from the American carmakers, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the US president's exemption would prevent car parts from being affected by the 20% Fentanyl trade duty imposed on Chinese electronics and the 25% levy on global imports of steel and aluminum. However, the exemption would not extend to the 25% tariff on all imported vehicles and car parts, which is set to take effect on May 3.
This proposed exemption follows another one made two weeks ago for various technological devices, including smartphones and chips, which protected them from the 145% tariff on Chinese goods.
