United States President Donald Trump ordered a federal investigation into the national security risks tied to the country's reliance on foreign-sourced minerals. Through an executive order, Trump directed the US Commerce Department to begin a Section 232 investigation under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
The probe will also consider potential trade actions, including tariffs, to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependency on overseas producers. The order highlighted growing concerns over foreign market manipulation and export controls, especially from China.
According to the White House, Trump's order would potentially build on earlier trade measures, including higher tariffs on steel, aluminum and Chinese imports.
