United States President Donald Trump announced at a press conference on Monday that the National Guard will be deployed to Washington DC in order to "help reestablish law, order, and public safety." In addition, the president said he invoked Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act, placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct Federal control.
"Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals ... druged-out maniacs and homeless people, and we're not gonna let it happen anymore," the president said.
Trump praised the work on securing the country's southern border and stopping illegal immigration, adding that similar measures will be taken to fight crime in Washington DC.
