United States President Donald Trump remains "unconvinced" about regime change in Iran, Axios reported on Tuesday. According to an unnamed senior administration official, "it's the Ayatollah you know versus the Ayatollah you don't know," implying Washington is concerned about the uncertainty that would follow the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Previous reports suggested Trump vetoed Israel's plans to kill Khamenei, insisting that "we're not even talking about going after the political leadership" until Iran kills a US national. However, the administration official told Axios that Trump could still "swoop in and do some gigantic action."
