United States President Donald Trump has been privately discussing for months the possibility of firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people briefed on the talks.

Trump has been talking with Kevin Warsh, a former Fed Board of Governors member, about dismissing Powell before his term ends in 2026. They even discussed the possibility of Warsh succeeding Powell, the sources said. However, Warsh advised Trump against firing the current Fed chair.

During a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump told reporters that he is "not happy with" Powell, stressing that he has the authority to fire the Fed chief. "If I want him out, he'll be out of there real fast, believe me," he underlined.
