United States President Donald Trump plans to put US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff (pictured) in charge of addressing US concerns over Iran's nuclear programme, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, although Witkoff's primary focus will continue to be implementing the Gaza ceasefire, he will also enforce Trump's efforts to "stop the wars" in the Middle East region by taking a diplomatic approach to nuclear talks with Iran before opting for the US president's "maximum pressure" policy, which would entail additional sanctions on Tehran.

During a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Iranian Vice-President for Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif, when asked about a potential deal between Iran and the US, stated that he hopes that Trump will be "more serious, more focused" during his second term.
