United States President Donald Trump is pushing for an early renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The USMCA trade deal was made during Trump's first term in office and was due for a statutory review in 2026. However, according to the report, the US president wants to review it sooner, and he is reportedly using the threat of tariffs to "pressure" the two nations to renegotiate the deal as soon as next week. The threat of tariffs also aims to help Trump change the automotive rules of the deal, which would force automakers to move from Canada and Mexico back to the US, according to the source cited in the report.
Trump's nominees for the US Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, and the US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, will reportedly be tasked with renegotiating the USMCA.
