United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday his relationship with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping is "very good" and noted Washington is "getting very close" to reaching an agreement on trade with Beijing.
Asked by CNBC whether he plans to meet Xi, Trump noted he would be open to a meeting before the end of 2025 if a trade agreement is reached. The US president insisted that striking the deal is "not imperative" but that he does expect one. He also claimed that China "was collapsing" and is "very reliant" on the US when it comes to trade.
The comments come after the two sides engaged in fresh trade talks last week in an effort to extend their trade truce reached in May. Following the negotiations, China said a deal was reached to prolong the temporary tariff pause past August 12, but US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it was awaiting Trump's approval.
