United States President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday he believed that Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were behind the recent events in Syria which resulted in the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime and described it as an "unfriendly takeover."

"Nobody knows who the other side is," Trump said about the recent developments in the war-torn country, continuing: "But I know, Turkey. He [Erdogan] is a very smart guy, they wanted it for thousands of years, and he got it. Those people that went in are controlled by Turkey and that's okay it's another way to fight."

Trump further stated that he would not want any US troops killed in Syria but concluded by saying that "nobody knows" what the outcome of the conflicts in the Middle East would be.
