United States President Donald Trump will appoint US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell (pictured) as the acting director of national intelligence (DNI), the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed White House sources.
Grenell is reportedly a Trump loyalist who has been devotedly working on American president's objectives in Germany. He was previously never employed in the intelligence community.
Previous Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats has stepped down from the role in August 2019, while the current acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire is legally obligated to leave the post by March 12. The director of national intelligence oversees 17 intelligence agencies and advises the president and the National Security Council on national security issues.
