US chief justice halts return of wrongly deported man

United States Chief Justice John Roberts on Monday delayed a midnight deadline for the Trump administration to bring back Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador.

The decision came in response to US District Judge Paula Xinis' order for his return after finding that immigration officials violated a 2019 ruling that said the man would likely face persecution if sent back. In its appeal to the ruling, the Justice Department (DoJ) called Xinis' order "unprecedented and indefensible."
