Tsunami alert in place after 6.1-quake hits Crete

Tourists were urged to move away from the coast on the Greek island of Crete after authorities issued a tsunami alert early Thursday following the powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Crete.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the tremor hit at 6:19 am local time at a depth of 75 kilometers. The epicenter was located approximately 80 kilometers northeast of the island's capital of Irakleion and 61 kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos.
