Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu warned on Tuesday that Turkey would intervene if Greece did not demilitarize the Aegean islands. In a meeting with Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu in Ankara, the Turkish minister criticized Greece for breaching several agreements that ban the militarization of the Eastern Aegean islands.
Referring to Greece's recent military exercises in Rhodes, just 84 kilometers from Turkey's coast, Cavusoglu said that Ankara "cannot keep quiet about it" and "will do what is necessary" should the former refuse to take "a step back."
Eastern Mediterranean tensions between Turkey and Greece were at the center of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in October.
