Two IDF reservists arrested on suspicion of spying for Iran

UNSPLASH / LEVI MEIR CLANCY

Israeli police and Shin Bet stated on Monday that two Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reservists were arrested on suspicion of "committing security offenses" and spying for Iran.

The two Israeli citizens, Yuri Eliaspov and Georgi Andreev, carried out "security missions" for financial compensation from an Iranian official. According to the police, Eliaspov passed on classified information that he obtained during his time in the military, where he served in the Air Defense Division. He reportedly also connected his friend, Andreev, to the Iranian official, after which he started carrying out missions, such as spraying graffiti across the country and assisting Yuri in his missions.

According to the police investigation, Eliaspov and Andreev also tried to recruit other Israeli citizens through social media and were aware that the person they were in contact with was an Iranian official.
