The United Kingdom's Heathrow Airport will be closed until midnight, UK time on Friday, March 21, due to a significant power outage caused by a fire at an electrical substation that supplies the airport.

"To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23:59 on 21 March," an airport spokesperson posted on X, adding that "passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The shutdown will affect at least 1,351 flights, according to the flight tracking website FlightRadar24. In addition, 120 aircraft already in the air will be diverted to alternative airports or return to their origin.
