French Prime Minister Michel Barnier was overthrown on Wednesday after a no-confidence vote was successfully passed, with 331 members of Parliament voting in favor of it.
This marks the first time since 1962 that a prime minister has been overthrown with a no-confidence vote in France. Barnier also became the prime minister with the shortest-lived tenure in French history, with 90 days spent leading the government. He will resume his duties until French President Emmanuel Macron chooses his successor.
The motion was initiated after Barnier adopted the 2025 budget without a vote in the parliament, which triggered a negative response from both the left-wing parties and the right-wing National Rally (RN).
