United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Lammy conducted on Friday morning an emergency COBRA meeting to address rising tensions between Lebanon and Israel, amid concerns about evacuations of British nationals, Sky News reported.
It is said UK officials discussed contingency plans for evacuating citizens, with military resources on standby. Two ships are already positioned in the area, and additional troops have been deployed to a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus, the media said. "My message to British nationals in Lebanon is leave while commercial options remain. Tensions are high and the situation could deteriorate rapidly," Lammy warned on Thursday on X.
Discussions are said to have taken place in the aftermath of several attacks that targeted Hezbollah communication devices and injured thousands, which are thought to have been executed by Israel. The Iran-backed organization pledged revenge, heightening fears that the Middle East is closer to a deeper regional conflict.
