British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed support for China's mega embassy in London, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
Both officials sent a joint letter to the Planning Inspectorate for England emphasizing the need for nations to maintain operational diplomatic facilities in one another’s capitals. The letter also revealed that the Metropolitan Police had "withdrawn their objection" to Beijing’s plan to construct the diplomatic complex at Royal Mint Court, located near the City of London.
However, the ministers insisted that China modify a minor aspect of the design and relinquish diplomatic accreditation for seven other sites scattered across London. The move comes after Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves visited Beijing and Shanghai last week seeking to strengthen economic ties.
