UK to review Amazon's $1.7B acquisition of iRobot

EPA/CJ GUNTHER

The United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on Thursday it will open an investigation into Amazon's planned takeover of iRobot Corp. valued at $1.7 billion.

iRobot is an American tech company that designs and builds consumer robots, and is known for its robot vacuum products. The expected takeover is being reviewed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States since September last year, and the European Union is reportedly also planning to launch a probe into it.

Commenting on the probe, the CMA explained that it wants to determine if the agreement reduces competition in the domestic smart home devices market.
