The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) of the British parliament published two reports on Thursday, in which it was described how the country's intelligence agencies MI6 and MI5 tolerated the repeated mistreatment and rendition of terrorism suspects by the United States in the years after September 11 attacks until 2010. No evidence was found that UK's intelligence officials actually took part in the misconduct, however, it was noted that in two instances they were "party to mistreatment administered by others." In 232 reported cases, British officials knew or suspected mistreatment.
"That the US, and others, were mistreating detainees is beyond doubt, as is the fact that the Agencies and Defence Intelligence were aware of this at an early point," the lawmakers said. It also alleged that the highest intelligence officials knew about the mistreatment reports, but avoided taking necessary actions.
