The unemployment rate in the United Kingdom went up 0.1 percentage point in the trimester to March compared to the previous quarter to land at 3.9%, marginally higher than market expectations, the Office for National Statistics reported on Tuesday.
The employment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to reach 75.9% in the corresponding trimester, driven by part-time employees and self-employed workers. The economic inactivity rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points in the quarter to arrive at 21.0%.
The estimated number of vacancies fell by 55,000 to arrive at 1,083,000, marking the 10th consecutive drop. The average weekly earnings excluding bonuses went up by 6.7%, while the number of payrolled employees in April 2023 fell for the first time since 2021, recording a monthly change of 136,000.
