The rate of unemployment in the United Kingdom stood at 4.2% in the three months to June, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Tuesday. The reading is up 0.3 percentage points from the previous quarter and is the highest since 2021.
The employment rate was estimated at 75.7%, down by 0.1 percentage points from the previous three-month period. Meanwhile, there were 1,020,000 job vacancies in the May-to-July period, marking a decline of 66,000 from the quarter to April.
Average regular pay adjusted for price inflation rose 0.1% on a yearly basis, while earnings in nominal terms jumped by a record 7.8%. Including bonuses, average pay adjusted for inflation increased by 0.5%, while nominal average weekly earnings climbed by 8.2%, with the ONS pointing out that this total growth rate was affected by the NHS one-off bonus payments made in June 2023.
