British Home Secretary James Cleverly traveled to Rwanda on Tuesday where he signed a treaty with the government on handling asylum seeker applications. The policy would see asylum seekers who come to the United Kingdom on small boats relocated to Rwanda, with Cleverly insisting they "are not at risk of being returned to a country where their life or freedom would be threatened."
The British government's plan was recently deemed illegal by the UK's Supreme Court and Cleverly said the treaty "addresses all the issues raised" by the ruling. "If we don't address these issues, the people that will ultimately be the winners are the people smugglers, slave traders, criminal gangs and extremist voices who always take advantage of human difficulties and hardship," Cleverly added.
