The government of the United Kingdom confirmed on Tuesday that the Sizewell C nuclear power plant will go ahead, with a £700 million public investment. Business Secretary Grant Shapps visited the eastern town of Suffolk to sign the agreement with French energy giants Electricite de France (EDF) in this joint venture.
The announcement also means that China General Nuclear can exit the deal, with Shapps adding that the project is moving the UK "towards greater energy independence." The plant will take about 10 years to build and costs are expected to be up to £30 billion. The government will have a 50% share of the project with EDF.
