The United Nations received notification from Washington about its decision to exit the Paris Agreement on climate change, AFP reported on Tuesday, citing United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

"I can confirm to you that the United States has notified the secretary-general, in his capacity as a depository, of its withdrawal on January 27 of this year from the Paris Agreement," the media cited Dujarric as saying. "According to Article 28, paragraph two, of the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal of the United States will take effect on January 27, 2026."

US President Donald Trump previously directed the country's departure from the accord, arguing that it imposed unjust obligations on the US economy. This move occurred during Trump's initial term in office as well.
