United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen on Wednesday underscored the importance of holding "free" and "fair" elections in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Pedersen also called for "immediate humanitarian assistance" for Syria, and expressed hope about the potential for a "political solution" in the Kurdish-controlled northeast.
Pedersen had previously cautioned that the conflict in Syria is far from over, warning of the risk of renewed clashes between Turkish-backed forces and Kurdish groups in the country's north.
