United Nations peacekeepers will remain in south Lebanon despite recent attacks that injured five members, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Andrea Tenenti told AFP.
Tenenti reportedly told the media outlet that the situation between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated and poses risks of developing into a broader regional conflict.
Tenenti revealed that Israel requested the withdrawal of UNIFIL troops from positions near the Blue Line, but the peacekeepers refused. ''There was a unanimous decision to stay because it’s important for the UN flag to still fly high in this region, and to be able to report to the Security Council," Tenenti was cited as saying.
