The White House National Security Council issued a statement on Tuesday expressing that the US was "seriously concerned" over the imposition of martial law in South Korea, noting that it had not been forewarned about this move.

"The US was not notified in advance of this announcement. We are seriously concerned by the developments we are seeing on the ground in the Republic of Korea," the document added.

Earlier, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the enforcement of martial law. Less than three hours later, the parliament moved to rescind the declaration, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik declaring the martial law as "invalid."
