United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced on Friday the government would begin trade talks with Canada and Mexico about a new continental trade agreement.

The potential deal, which is expected to address labor and environmental issues, will be negotiated during the meetings set to take place on May 17 and 18. "The ministers will receive updates about work already underway to advance cooperation... and will hold robust discussions about USMCA's landmark labor and environmental obligation," Tai noted.

The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) came into force in July last year after legislators of all three countries ratified the comprehensive trade agreement, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) implemented back in 1994.
