European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager said on Wednesday that the European Union and the United States will publish a draft code of conduct relating to the development of artificial intelligence "within weeks." The draft will be made in collaboration with industry experts and independents, she said.

Vestager added that the code of conduct will be presented to the tech industry "to commit to voluntarily." She said legislation on AI can take at least two or three years due to legislative processes in the EU and the US and that the code will serve as an intermediary solution for a "technological acceleration that is beyond belief." She added the EU and the US will try to get "as many countries on board as possible," including partners such as Canada, the United Kingdom, India, and Japan.
