US Embassy in Qatar urges citizens to 'shelter in place'

UNSPLASH / JOSHUA HOEHNE

The US Embassy in Qatar on Monday advised US citizens in the Gulf country to "shelter in place until further notice."

The message, which said "out of an abundance of caution we recommend American citizens shelter in place until further notice," was sent directly via email to US nationals in Qatar, according to reports from outlets including Al Arabiya and AFP. No further explanation was included in the alert.

Qatar hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East. It is one of two military bases southwest of Doha and, according to 2017 data, hosted over 11,000 US and coalition personnel. The new warning follows a "worldwide" security alert issued Sunday by the US State Department.
